"I've always been all over the lot in my writing. Except for poetry -- even though they say all the old-time sportswriters use plenty of it. Maybe it's just part of what we do."

Diagnostic evaluation ordered for woman who had controlled substance

By Laura Mecham

April 13, 2007 | LOGAN -- Irene Freeman, who pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, was issued an order Thursday in court for a diagnostic evaluation at the Utah State Prison.

After previously spending time in jail for the same charge, Freeman was let out on probation and ordered to attend a treatment program at the Serenity House.

Freeman left the treatment center before her rehabilitation was complete and began using controlled substances once again.

Upon violation of the terms and conditions of her probation, Freeman was arrested again.

Freeman's attorney, Travis Marker, provided evidence from Freeman's psychiatrist to Judge Gordon Low, demonstrating the need for further testing of her mental stability and whether it played a part in her substance use.

Rather than the potential five-year sentence, Low took into account the recommended testing and ordered a diagnostic evaluation, postponing a trial until June 13, 2007, after the testing has been completed.
