North Logan offering series of
gardening worskhops
By Emily Redfield
April 17, 2007 | NORTH LOGAN -- The city has caught
a case of spring fever this April, and is offering a
gardening series in the city library that will offer
nine workshops on gardening skills.
Stephanie Harrell, library employee, said these courses
are very successful. The library is offering two more
workshops than it did last year. People enjoy these
workshops and have been asking when they will start
up again, she said.
Twelve to 15 people attend the smaller session, while
25 t0 26 people attend the larger sessions, Harrell
said.
These workshops are offered through the USU extension.
They are funded by the school and they are offered in
the North Logan city library. The library also helps
advertise.
Loralee Cox, director of these programs who works
for the extension, said these programs started three
years ago, and have been growing every year since. Extension
agents from other counties come and teach the classes.
"[The College of] Natural Resources has money
left over from water conservation, and it is used to
fund these workshops," Cox said.
The main goal of these workshops is to give good gardening
info to the public. Some of the topics that are addressed
in these workshops are: soils, groundwork for gardeners,
plant disease, pruning, grass, fruit trees, ornamental
plants and vegetables.
"These are topics that homeowners would like to know
about," Cox said.
Another purpose of these workshops is to take knowledge
that the university has acquired and share it with the
community, she said.
"Sometimes homeowners don’t get correct information,
and we hope to give them [the right] information,"
she said.
