Today's word on journalism

"I've always been all over the lot in my writing. Except for poetry -- even though they say all the old-time sportswriters use plenty of it. Maybe it's just part of what we do."

--Frank DeFord, 2006

Utah's fastest schoolgirl a blur on the track, a comedian off it

By Jessica Wakley

April 18, 2007 | TREMONTON -- The fastest girl in Utah attends school in Tremonton. She is a team comedian and is only 15.

Felicity M. Jones, of 10355 W. 10400 North, is a sophomore at Bear River High School. On the track team she participates in the 100, the four by one, and sometimes the long jump and the 200.

As a freshman she was Rookie of the Year and won state in the 100 and the four by one. Her fastest time in the 100 is 12.2 seconds and in the four by one, 50.7 seconds.

Last year she was ranked third in state and this year she is ranked second.

When asked how she is doing this year she replied, "Good. I am faster than I was last year."

Track coach Chris Wise said Jones brings a lively spirit to the team, which keeps things fun and interesting.

"She is still young," said Wise, "She is not a team leader yet, but she is the comic relief for the team."

Each week Jones competes in meets Wednesday, Friday and sometimes Saturday. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday she practices for the meets by doing distance runs, sprints and works on her four by one.

Wise said, "She is very talented. She has raw talent but we just need to add technique into it to help her improve."

Jones also participates in basketball and soccer. She is a right wing in soccer and in basketball she plays whatever position the coach needs her to play.

"I am the point guard, guard, post, center and forward," Jones said laughing.

After high school, Jones plans to go to college. She is unsure if she will continue with track but plans on playing basketball.

The University of Texas, Tennessee, Maryland and U.S. Naval Academy are all interested in her.

She has overcome several injuries. During the basketball season she popped a joint in her vertebrae. She was out for a few days with a pinched nerve. She has had knee injuries and this year in track has suffered with a strained quad and calf.
