| USU
student gets community service, fines, probation for alcohol
possession

April 19, 2007 | LOGAN -- First District Court Judge
Cheryl Russell sentenced a 20-year-old USU student Wednesday
to 32 hours of community service.
Jordan Gilson, the student, has received five minor
in possession of alcohol tickets in Utah. He pleaded
no contest to the ticket for the citation he received
in January.
Russell said a "no contest" plea is effectively
the same as a guilty plea. Though he had gone to jail
for his last alcohol possession conviction, the Judge
was easier on him this time.
His sentence includes a $492 fine, 32 hours of community
service at the Logan landfill, 12 months of probation,
classes from a state certified rehab clinic and a daily
10 p.m. curfew.
"I am so glad I am not going back to jail. The
food there is horrible," Gilson said to his lawyer
as he was leaving the courtroom.
The maximum penalty for this charge is a $1,000 fine,
six months in jail and an 85 percent surcharge, Russell
said. Gilson was also told by Russell that he has the
right to appeal his sentence within 30 days.
"What is the problem, Jordan?" Russell asked
as she sighed and rubbed her forehead.
Gibson responded, "It took me a long time to
realize that alcohol should not be a big part of my
social life. I have stopped drinking."
The prosecuting attorney suggested to the judge that
Gilson should be required to do the state-certified
alcohol program that he was sentenced to do.
