"I've always been all over the lot in my writing. Except for poetry -- even though they say all the old-time sportswriters use plenty of it. Maybe it's just part of what we do."

April 19, 2007 | There was a lot of commotion Saturday coming from the south end of Logan. It could have been the Grand Opening of the Celebration Center, or it could have been the second week of the "So You Think You Can Sing" auditions.

Radio station 94.5 VFX is having "So you Think You Can Sing" auditions to find the best singer in Northern Utah. VFX reaches Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake City and Provo and is calling for singers to come show off their vocal ability.

The winner of this singing competition will be sent on an all-expenses-paid trip to audition for the reality TV show American Idol.

"Ever since American Idol started, it has been my dream to be on it," said Whitney Compton, 16-year-old So You Think You Can Sing Contestant. "So I figure, this is my chance."

Compton sang Listen to Your Heart, by D.H.T for a panel of three judges in hopes of making it to the semi-final round. The judges are local radio personalities from VFX.

There are three rounds of auditions. The first round of auditions are open to anyone who wants to try out. There is only one Saturday left (April 21) to audition for the first round.

Those selected from the first round will move on to audition in the semi-final round on April 28th.

Those chosen from the semi-final round will then compete in the finals May 12. Guest judges will be brought in, and an audience vote will also be a consideration in choosing who will be the winner.

Those wishing to audition can sign up at utahsvfx.com or just come in to the Celebration Center at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"If you think you can sing -- or even if you can't, we'll have a great time auditioning the truly terrible. And who knows, you may end up on the radio," said Amy Leigh, of VFX's Insane Morning Program.
