| Richmond
resident offers to help city get lights on Main Street
By Jena Stout
April 25, 2007 | RICHMOND -- In hopes to accommodate
citizens and visitors, Richmond resident Glen Gantz
asked the City Council on Tuesday if he could proceed
in finding streets lights for Main Street.
Gantz believes that Main Street would be safer and
more appealing if there were street lights, and he mentioned
they could attract new businesses.
"Main Street is easy to miss, and I think people
would appreciate some light around the Post Office and
the library in order to better get around," Gantz
said.
City Manager Marlow Atkins commented that in the future
the city would like to see the same style and color
street lights so that Main Street looks more appealing
at night. A few have been priced, and so far the best
price is around $2,500.
"The big issue here is strictly budget,"
Mayor Michael Hall said. "I would not be opposed
to it if we could find someway to finance it."
Gantz agreed to find some less-expensive options, or
perhaps a possible grant from the state. He said he
would get back to the council in next month's meeting
to report what he found.
Atkins replied that it was necessary to get lights
soon as Richmond continues to grow.
This is an issue the council would like to see solved
within the next year. The next City Council meeting
will be May 8.
