Paradise council buys 125-gallon propane tank

By Marilyn Shelton

April 26, 2007 | PARADISE -- The Town Council has approved a motion to purchase a 125-gallon propane tank.

Mayor Atwood talked about the need for a more efficient way to generate electricity to power the lights in the Paradise Town Hall. He said the furnace takes care of heating, but an alternate power generator was needed "in case of emergency or natural disaster."

He proposed that the city purchase a 125-gallon propane tank. The mayor said he went into Jardine's Petroleum of Logan to ask questions about the cost of a propane tank, such as how much electricity it would generate and for how long.

"If that generator is at full capacity, it uses 5.9 gallons per hour. That's three or four days of lighting. But do you really need to run the lights in the daytime?," Atwood said.

Councilman Leeland Howlett said, "The only problem is you have no way of filling the generator without calling Jardine."

"They fill and service every two weeks," Atwood said. "It would only cost a couple hundred dollars to get it up and running."

Councilwoman Margaret Obray asked where the tank would be placed.

The mayor said the tank could be placed between the fire station and the town hall so electricity could be shared.

"It's best not to put a fence around the tank. When you do that kids climb on it and play on it," he said.

"It seems this is our best option," said Obray.

The mayor also said he thought Jardine's Petroleum would provide accessories such as cinderblocks to put the tank on.

"All in favor that we purchase a 125 gallon propane tank with accessories?," asked Councilman Dale Anderson.

"Aye," said all four of the council members, including the mayor. A fifth, Gerry Winn, wasn't present.
