Today's word on journalism

Monday, January 14, 2008

A newspaper creed:

"An institution that should always fight for progress and reform, never tolerate injustice or corruption, always fight demagogues of all parties, never belong to any party, always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers, never lack sympathy with the poor, always remain devoted to the public welfare, never be satisfied with merely printing news, always be drastically independent, never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory plutocracy or predatory poverty."

Sportsman's Paradise sells outdoor experiences to hunters and anglers

By Tyler Larson

December 3, 2007 | PARADISE -- The Sportsman's Paradise isn't an outlet store selling all the top rifles and fishing poles, it's the real thing -- a paradise for sportsmen to use those items for what they were meant for, hunting.

"They come from all over the place, I think we've had people from almost every state," says Sean Kohlmeyer, who's been working there for 5 years.

Sportsman's Paradise is a hunting and fishing preserve for club members with about 6,000 acres of land that is also farmed. It's on the White Ranch, which has settled in 1868 by Bernard White, but has only been known as Sportsman's Paradise for about 10 years, Kohlmeyer said.

Sportsman's Paradise gives guided tours for big game, upland game and fly fishing, according to their Web site. The tours include meals, lodging, and a professional guide to help with the overall trip as well as trained hunting dogs for upland game hunting, provided by the ranch.

"We have about 500 members and have guided groups as large as 70 to 100 people," Kohlmeyer said.

Big game hunting is held on the Mt. Pisgah Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit which boasts around 11,000 acres, their Web site said. Fly fishing and upland game hunting are available anywhere on the two miles of stream on the ranch.

"October, November and December are our most busy times of the year," Kohlmeyer said, "so right now we're staying pretty busy."

According to their Web site, their streams have more than 20,000 fish in them at any given time and breeds a great habitat for trout because of the mixture of still and running water that has not been altered. The Sportsman's Paradise only allows catch-and-release, Kohlmeyer said.

The club at Sportsman's Paradise also holds activities including the "Longest ail-Feather" contest to see which hunter gets the longest tail feather of the pheasants hunted in the day.

Sportsman's Paradise is at 399 W. 9000 South in Paradise. For more information visit Whitesranch.com.
