Today's word on journalism

Monday, January 14, 2008

A newspaper creed:

"An institution that should always fight for progress and reform, never tolerate injustice or corruption, always fight demagogues of all parties, never belong to any party, always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers, never lack sympathy with the poor, always remain devoted to the public welfare, never be satisfied with merely printing news, always be drastically independent, never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory plutocracy or predatory poverty."

Carlson declared the winner in Mendon's close council race

By Cody Gochnour

December 7, 2007 | MENDON -- With the new year comes a new City Council, mostly. Mayor Michael Morgan and Councilman Jon Hardman thanked council members Leslie Larson, Allen Gardner and RoseAnn Brandley at last month's council meeting, the last of the year.

They also congratulated George Allen Deweese and Jason L. Wooden who will be joining them in January. The race for the third seat, however, was still undecided as a close race between write-in candidates necessitated waiting for an absentee ballot count.

With the final numbers in, Mike Carlson emerged the winner of the write-in race.

The council also heard from two applicants for the seat left open earlier this fall when Julie Gwilliam resigned. The public portion of the meeting was then closed so that the council could discuss the applicants and suggest their choice to Mayor Morgan for final approval.

Phil Coulter was selected and will remain on the council for two years, finishing Gwilliam's term.
