| Dawn
of another ASUSU campaign season
By Devin Felix
Feebruary 27, 2007 | Students can expect to find themselves
once again deluged by fliers, candy and slogans when
ASUSU election campaigning officially begins Wednesday.
All 50 candidates, including eight presidential candidates,
are allowed to begin seeking votes for the primary elections
at 7 a.m. Wednesday, said Elections Committee chair
Lisa Watkins.
Students will be able to vote for the primaries Wednesday,
Thursday and part of Friday. The primary election winners
will be announced at 2 p.m. Friday, with two candidates
from each race advancing to the finals. Students will
be able to vote by following a link on the USU webmail
page, or on A-Station, the ASUSU Web site.
A detailed set of rules governs what is allowed during
campaigning, Watkins said. For example, candidates are
only allowed to spend up to $400 on their campaigns
and each is allowed only one 8-by-8-foot A-frame sign
to advertise on campus.
Campaigning in the community outside USU is not allowed,
and no candidate may campaign in the TSC or the Merrill-Cazier
Library, Watkins said. Animals, such as the camels and
llamas that have been seen on campus during previous
years’ campaigns, will not be allowed. Candidates who
believe their opponents have violated rules will be
allowed to take complaints to an Elections Committee
grievance board, which meets each day of the campaign
period. The board will hear the complaints and decide
whether a punishment should be levied.
Candidates advancing to the final elections will begin
campaigning again at 7 a.m. Monday, and the winners
will be announced at 5 p.m. March 7.
