Grammatically Speaking:

"We owe much to our mother tongue. It is through speech and writing that we understand each other and can attend to our needs and differences. If we don't respect and honor the rules of English, we lose our ability to communicate clearly and well. In short, we invite mayhem, misery, madness, and inevitably even more bad things that start with letters other than M."

North Logan opts to go for 'healthy community' award

By Bethany Crane

February 4, 2008 | NORTH LOGAN -- The City Council met Jan. 16 to discuss financial affairs of the city and the plans to join the Healthy Community award program, opening up new policies and choosing the award level they wish to achieve.

All of the council members attended except for Al Moser and were presented with last year's financial figures and the possibilities for new ways to use the money available to better help the North Logan community. The justice court judge was re-sworn in and the formalities all performed.

The council considered a proposal for an increase in energy sales and use the taxes for different projects in the city. This would mean taxing on gas and electricity, but opening up other areas as well. This is being presented to the budget committee for further review.

A cemetery monument was mentioned to be erected in the North Logan cemetery, to be dedicated on Jan. 24.

Allen Grunig of the Bear River Health Department presented a proposal that North Logan join the Healthy Community award program. Obesity has long been an issue and this program is meant to help encourage programs and policies that would help decrease this growing problem.

"This is a no brainer." said Kevin Dustin, after hearing Grunig's proposal, and the council agreed that it would be an excellent addition to North Logan. There are four different levels to be awarded on, they are ranked from Bronze to Platinum. These awards are based on facilities, equipment, environmental supports and resources provided by the city. It is unclear which award North Logan would like to aim for, but that should be announced shortly in their application for the award. Bear River will go over their proposed policies and decide on a plan to set in effect. The cities already participating are Hyde Park, Smithfield, Richmond, Logan and Nibley.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at the North Logan Library.
