Grammatically Speaking:

"We owe much to our mother tongue. It is through speech and writing that we understand each other and can attend to our needs and differences. If we don't respect and honor the rules of English, we lose our ability to communicate clearly and well. In short, we invite mayhem, misery, madness, and inevitably even more bad things that start with letters other than M."

February 6, 2008 | LOGAN -- Rock Haus Climbing Gym recently hosted a locals-only bouldering competition to give Logan's climbing community a boost.

Community members packed the Rock Haus to cheer on those who made it into the finals. The competition, dubbed Rock Haus Rising, had upwards of 80 climbers in the competition, with 22 making it to the finals in five categories.

Owner Trevor Berrett decided to make the climbing competition a locals-only event to build the climbing community and let locals know they are appreciated.

Berrett said, "A gym is only cool because of the locals that climb there. This was our way of saying thanks."

Rock Haus, which has been open for nearly two years, has sponsored competitions before. This is the first of its kind to help the Rock Haus find members for its climbing team, which will compete in USA Climbing competitions.

Berrett said, "If a gym doesn't have a team they won't host a competition. If we want to support a competition we have to have a team, and we [Rock Haus] want to provide that opportunity for our climbers."

The January 25 competition was both joy and trial for Berrett who had to spend a week setting new routes in the bouldering room of the gym to challenge the climbers participating in the competition.

"I'd like to do a locals competition three times a year," said Berrett, "but doing one a year has been pretty hard."

Although the Jan. 25 competition was trying for Berrett, he is looking forward to the USA Climbing competition Rock Haus will sponsor April 19.
