Grammatically Speaking:

"We owe much to our mother tongue. It is through speech and writing that we understand each other and can attend to our needs and differences. If we don't respect and honor the rules of English, we lose our ability to communicate clearly and well. In short, we invite mayhem, misery, madness, and inevitably even more bad things that start with letters other than M."

Mendon council reminds residents to lock doors when they leave home

By M. Kathryn Hanberg

February 19, 2008 | MENDON -- City Council consisted of many issues Thursday evening, one of which involved a burglary. Win Gardner, director of the Mendon Library, announced during the police portion of the meeting that her home was broken into within the last month while she and her husband were at church.

"They entered in the back door. We didn't lock our doors that day," said Gardner

"Let that be a lesson to each of us to lock our doors," said Mayor Mike Morgan.

According to Deputy Matt Hansen, there have been a series of burglaries and thefts in the area.

Other issues Hansen brought up were parking citations. According to Hansen, all who are parked on the road after midnight will receive a parking citation through April. Another concern is "joy-riding" on snowmobiles in local areas.

"Snowmobiles are only to be used to get from home to the hills," Morgan said.

A representative from the youth council was also present and updated the city council on their most recent dance. He also asked for $600 for "clean and comfortable music to listen to" that could be used at future dances.

Councilman George PeWeese announced the appointing of new members on the library member board.

PeWeese also announced a new board being formed of five committee members and one recorder. This board will interview individuals who have had flooding in their homes or are in a high risk area. The board will collect the data and expand the 2003 engineering report. They will then focus on finding funds other than the city to repair the damage done by flooding, he said.

During the public hearing, Councilman Jason Wooden read the changes in the city subdivision ordinance. The largest change was chapter three of the ordinance. This chapter is on conservation subdivision. Conservation subdivisions allow the developer to cluster the houses at a higher density as long as the extra land is used for conservation, said Wooden.

City council meetings are the second Thursday of each month. For the time and location, visit the city Web site at http://www.mendonutah.net.
