News from the vast wasteland:

"I'm here to propose that we replace the bad old bargain that past FCCs struck with the media moguls with a new American Media Contract. It goes like this. We, the American people have given broadcasters free use of the nation's most valuable spectrum, and we expect something in return. We expect this:
1. A right to media that strengthens our democracy
2. A right to local stations that are actually local
3. A right to media that looks and sounds like America
4. A right to news that isn't canned and radio playlists that aren't for sale
5. A right to programming that isn't so damned bad so damned often."

CAPSA to host benefit concert Saturday

January 24, 2007 | CAPSA, the Val R. Christensen Service Center and the USU Sexual Assault & Anti-Violence Information Office (SAAVI) are presenting a benefit concert to raise awareness about rape and domestic violence at Utah State University.

Local bands The First Chance Sell Outs, Room 102, Joshua James and Night Night are donating their performances in order to help raise awareness about these important issues.

"Studies show that approximately one in four women will experience sexual violence by the age of 25, and many more men and women also experience the tragic consequences of emotional, verbal and physical abuse in an intimate relationship with a spouse or dating partner," said Tracy Hernandez, public relations director at CAPSA. "We want to raise awareness about the problem, and inform students about the many resources that are available if they are a victim, or know someone who is."

The concert is put on by CAPSA, the Val. R. Christensen Service Center and the USU Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information Office. Businesses sponsoring the event include the USU Bookstore, U.S. Army Recruiting Office in Logan, USU Charter Credit Union, Mountain America Credit Union, Costa Vida, Firehouse Pizzeria, Cache Valley Bank, Papa Kelsey’s & Henry, Deseret First Credit Union, New Horizons Beauty College, Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, Square One Printing and the Logan Police Department.

The event will be Jan. 27 at the Nelson Recreation Center at USU. Doors will open at 7:30 and the concert will begin at 8.

Tickets are $3 with a USU student ID and $4 without, and will be sold at the door beginning at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event go to CAPSA to assist local victims of domestic violence and rape in Cache Valley.
