Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

Hyrum's Bear Creek Bakery makes old-fashioned good food

By Jake Ipson

March 3, 2008 | HYRUM -- If you are looking for a great meal, look no further then Bear Creek Bakery. Located downtown in Hyrum, right on Main Street, sits a little restaurant that has a lot to offer.

The restaurant is co-owned by Jan and David Wurst. They came from northern California when a friend of David's told them how wonderful of an area Cache Valley is. So they decided to give Cache Valley a chance and opened this unique restaurant.

David always wanted to have a log cabin and he loved bears. That was the inspiration behind the design of the restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant is a wall that looks like a log cabin. Along the other wall are paintings of bears and other wildlife.

Jan said, "It's so we can sit at our log cabin and look out at the wildlife."

The restaurant looks great, but how about the food? The food is great too. They have tried to make it so the town has a place to go where they can get healthier food.

The breads are made from organic flour. There are no fillers in the bread either; they are made with pure honey. Even though it says bakery on their name, they provide many other types of food as well. You can come in and get an espresso or a real-fruit made smoothie. Or stop by for lunch or dinner; the menu includes hamburgers and sandwiches. But you can also get fries with that meal and these aren't your everyday frozen fries, these are made from actual potatoes.

Another popular meal that they serve is a pasty. The best way to describe a pasty would be a pot pie without the gravy. Jan said they have sold 20 to 50 of these pasties at a time. Jan got the recipe from her great-grandmother which she got from an old English recipe. These dishes are so popular, because you can take them home to freeze and eat them when and wherever you would like. Jan says they even make for a great meal on the go.

Another big attraction is the all-you-can-eat spaghetti night every Wednesday night. If you are not in the mood for spaghetti, other nights have different dinners as well, but Wednesday is the only all-you-can-eat night. To finish off the meal, an assortment of desserts are made fresh daily. Such as their wheat and oat muffins, those are high in fiber and low in calories.

So if you are ever in the area, stop in and try the Bear Creek Bakery. The atmosphere is good, the food is great and the prices are outstanding.
