Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

March 19, 2008 | Walk into Shaffer House Baker and the sweet smell of doughnuts, cookies and cakes fills your nose, but that's not the only thing the Shaffer House has to entice people.

Shaffer House Bakery, at 1045 N. Main, has supplied the residents and restaurants of Cache Valley with breads and sweets for 30 years, keeping quality No. 1. Starting with Grandpa Shaffer in the late 1970s, Camie Holden, the granddaughter of Don, and Tony Holden have since taken over but are still holding strong to the values that their shop was built on.

"We do everything from scratch," said Camie. "Our breads, doughnuts, pastries, everything." Not cutting corners and being true to the art of baking, Camie and Tony don't want to let money making get in the way of providing top-quality baked goods to their customers.

Tony said, "When people come in we want them to remember the quality and we didn't cut any corners to make it taste good. We still use real butter; we make all of our pie fillings and crust here."

Shaffer House offers 12 kinds of rolls that it sells daily as well as daily breads, with Grandpa's Bread being the favorite. Shaffer House bread isn't just available in the store but can be tasted an numerous other locations in Cache Valley since its supply bread to restaurants such as The Italian Place, Fredrico's, The White Owl and Logan's Heroes just to name a few.

When it comes to big box stores getting more business, Tony said, "It is tough because everyone wants the lowest price, but our customers are loyal to us. They've been around a while."

Loyal customers and being a full service bakery are what the Holdens can credit for their success and their unwavering commitment to providing quality goods. Shaffer House not only does their daily breads but wedding cakes and special orders that most bakeries won't do.Special order cakes are something that Camie is use to since she started decorating cakes at 16.

"The craziest cake I have ever made" Camie said, "was a replica of the White House I made for a kid's birthday."

Shaffer House Bakery is open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5 to 5 Saturdays and is closed on Sundays.
