Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

North Logan's cemetery committee can keep plotting and planning, council says

By Bethany Crane

March 20, 2008 | NORTH LOGAN -- A larger than normal crowd appeared at the City Council meeting, fighting to keep the cemetery committee intact as it nears the end of the 10 year-long task of creating a cemetery for North Logan. Convinced their use is not over, council members passed a motion to leave the committee in charge of what is left to be done.

After a long discussion about the city's growing costs to maintain its park and recreation areas the issues that have recently come to light regarding the cemetery were addressed. Issues brought before the council such as permanent employment for the cemetery staff. It is in desperate need of a sexton and the committee has been concerned.

"We need a person dedicated to this, somebody's going to have to be available to go and schedule and show people plots, mark the plots, mark places for the headstones, making sure we get it right the first time." said Terrel Huppi of the cemetery committee.

North Logan has long awaited this cemetery and are concerned about purchasing plots. "People have been waiting ten years for this," said Nancy Potter, another member of the cemetery committee.

The committee will deliberate further how to make this possible, and plans to have plots available soon after the dedication, which is tentatively set for July 24. Future plans include a memorial rock and a sign for the entrance.

"Every year we've had to fight for everything we've gotten," said Potter when speaking to the council about the ten years this committee has existed and pressed forward with plans.

However in this particular meeting they were met with little if no resistance and the council members were happy to give the future duties and remainder of planning to the committee and approved the motion to keep the committee intact. The council thanked the committee for all they had done and simply requested to be kept in the loop.

The next city council meeting will be April 2 in the North Logan City Library.
