Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

Utah State football team deep, even at QB

By C. Jake Williams

Four players have a shot to earn the starting quarterback nod in what Utah State football coach Brent Guy is calling a 'wide-open' race.

Freshman Ben Longshore, sophomore Diondre Borel, junior Jase McCormick and senior Sean Setzer began competing for the position Wednesday, the first day of spring drills for the 2008 season.

"We're gonna have a lot of live reps and get those guys equal reps, and see who can win the job," said Guy.

McCormick has the most experience according to Guy, who also commended Setzer for his offseason work of changing his body and getting into better shape.

Utah State will have increased depth at most positions this season, as was evident by 97 players participating in the padless practice.

"I had 64 scholarship guys here today when the first spring we had 56 total, including walk-ons," said Guy.

Aggie fans will have more players to cheer for in 2008, but it remains to be seen whether they'll have more wins as well. Last year Utah State finished the season with two road wins after starting the season on a 10-game skid.

The Aggies begin the 2008 season Aug. 30 at UNLV and will have six homes games for the first time since 1998. Both Utah and BYU will travel to Romney Stadium this year, with games Sept. 13 and Oct. 3, respectively.
