Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

If you're tired of blah winter weather, Hawaii is the place for you

By Natalie Archibald

March 21, 2008 | Winter in Logan this year has seemed longer and colder than usual. I found myself yearning for the warmth of the sun. I had been feeling cold, sad and depressed. I decided I needed more vitamin D, which would require me to spend time in the sun. Probably as many of you, I haven't seen much of the sun this winter. I started dreaming a place I could go where the sun always shines. Some place where my winter blues would melt away. Spring break was fast approaching so my roommate and I decided to go somewhere warm and sunny to fill our vitamin D canteen, we chose Hawaii.

After a long flight it was so refreshing to arrive on the Island of Oahu and feel warm for the first time in months. The air in Hawaii even smells better. I could tell it was going to be a great trip. My roommate and I had made a list of things we wanted to do and first on the list was head to the beach and have a delicious, frozen, fruity drink with a little umbrella in it. Wow, that really hit the spot; it was delicious and very satisfying!

Being the thrifty travelers that we are, we took the very slow bus to the North Shore. Our first stop was at a place called the Point in the town of Laie that was absolutely breathtaking. We were out on a rocky point with powerful waves crashing below us.

Our next stop was at the famous Giovanni's Shrimp Van in Laie. They are famous for their garlic shrimp. Just a warning, you will smell like garlic for the next 2 days. I felt sorry for people who had to sit by us on the bus. I have never eaten shrimp before this experience and I am definitely hooked now. It was delicious and I highly recommend it to everyone who gets the chance to taste it!

We also went to Wiamea Bay on the North Shore. This beach was quite and the water was so clear and blue there is only one word for this beach - perfect. The sand wasn't too hot and it felt so good between my toes. There is nothing better than just relaxing on the beach listening to the wave's crash down upon the sand.

If you ever get to Hawaii you should go to Matsumoto's in Hale'iwa for a snow cone. This is no ordinary snow cone we get in Utah. These come with either ice cream or sweetened beans which are called azukis. I got ice cream in mine and it was absolutely divine, I am sure the beans were good to.

We stayed at the ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel. We had an ocean view room which had a beautiful view of the whole beach. Every morning we woke up to live Hawaiian music playing down by the pool with a Hawaiian dancer. We ate breakfast on the beach almost every morning.

Hawaii is the perfect vacation if you are looking to get away. I came back refreshed, relaxed and tan after soaking up some of that wonderful sunshine. I am now thinking about moving there because it was so great. I am sure I could get a job selling delicious frozen fruity drinks on the beach.

We found a great deal on Orbitz.com which included our hotel, flight and breakfast every morning. Our transportation around Hawaii was really cheap; we only spent $12 riding the bus the whole four days. It was time consuming but we really felt like a local. Food was expensive but that is to be expected in Hawaii.

Oh, one more piece of advice, take your own chocolate licorice because there is none to be found on the island of Oahu, trust me, I looked!
