Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

Cruise a fun option for spring break

By Jason Chesney

March 21, 2008 | As summer approaches and students begin the end-of-the-year rush to finish the semester on a high note, many take advantage of the weeklong vacation also known as spring break. Some students at Utah State take the time to catch up on homework, others try to relax from studies, but for most students a week in the sunshine seemed to be the optimal choice.

Thirteen USU students ranging in age from 19 to 26 decided to cruise to Ensenada, Mexico, for spring break.

"It was not an expensive trip, that sounded more fun than sitting at home;" said Jackie Lambert, a 22-year-old senior who went on the trip.

Students do a number of things to keep spring break expenses to a minimum. Many work throughout the school year to save up for their trips, some plan early to cut costs, and others use family connections. One student spent the week at a resort in southern California staying at a condo owned by his father's employer.

"Honestly, even if this trip had cost double what it did, it would have been worth it for the fun I had over the break;" said Lambert.

Cruises offer a variety of activities both on and off the ship. On board there was a spa, miniature golf, a variety of live entertainment, and of course, sun bathing. A favorite activity on board among the USU students was mingling in the karaoke bar.

"We loved the karaoke bar, mostly because of the DJ, but it was a great place to unwind at the end of the day;" said one USU student who went on the cruise.

Off board, the cruise company offered parasailing, kayaking, and snorkeling as options to help their customers better enjoy their vacation. The group of 13 chose to bike on Catalina Island, 30 miles west of Los Angeles.

After a week on a boat and a short jaunt to Mexico the 13 students return to Logan, energized and rejuvenated to finish the semester. At least, that's what they hoped to accomplish while away.

"After coming back from spring break, I think I have developed a bad case of 'senior-it is.' I just don't feel like doing anything right now. It will be hard to keep myself motivated until the end of April;" described one journalism student, "After a trip like that, it's hard to get back into the routine of school again."

The purpose of spring break may be to reduce stress and take a break from obligations of school, but some students just play too hard to really have a chance to relax. In this case, I guess it's a good thing spring break comes just before the end of the semester.
