Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

--Howard Schneider, former Newsday editor, on the death yesterday of Bob Greene, larger-than-life investigative reporter, editor and Pulitzer winner, April 10, 2008

Healthy living tips for college students on the go: Organize, de-junk and spring clean

By Heather Maile

March 21, 2008 | Now that it is officially spring, it's time to start getting down and dirty cleaning that lovely place you call home. There are plenty of resources to help you do your organizing, de-junking, and spring cleaning.

ORGANIZATION: Containers, containers, containers. The more that you have your belongings organized in similar categories the tidier your place will look. Most places while in the college years do not have a ton of storage space, so you'll want to get creative. Use baskets, suitcases, drawers and shelves wisely to get the most out of your space. A great website that I would recommend for this step is www.flylady.com. They give you so many helpful tips and have a lot of creative ideas.

DE-JUNK: Break your items down into categories to see how attached you are, for example: Not sure if I'll need this anymore, Need it, Like it, and Can't live without it. If you are unsure about an item, whether you want to keep it or not put it in a basket an store it in your closet. If you haven't missed it or needed it after 3-6 months it may not be worth storing anymore. A few ways to get rid of the things that you are ready to part with are: have a yard sale, post them on the bulletin board at school, sell them on Craig's list, or just donate them to an organization such as Deseret Industries or Somebody's Attic.

SPRING CLEANING: One of the most important things that I think about when it comes to spring cleaning is getting my carpets cleaned. There has been a lot tracked in from those snow packed salted roads, and it would be beneficial to clean them once there isn't much on the ground to track in. Most carpet cleaning companies offer deals right around this time that actually make it very reasonable to get them done. Look for coupons in the Val-Pak coupon mailer for a discount on this service. You can also rent a machine from your local grocery store and do it yourself. Along, with carpet cleaning, you should consider cleaning your windows inside and out, your vents and light fixtures etc. A good source to turn to on cleaning tips and how to create your own cleaning solutions is www.flylady.com. Once again, they give you resourceful tips and great recommendations.

Good luck with your spring cleaning. If you take the time to put in the elbow grease, you'll be a happier person.
