Today's word on journalism

More from the Do-Gooder File:

"For much of his career, he could outthink, out-hustle, out-report, outeat, outdrink and outwork any other journalist in the country. But if his excesses were occasionally unbridled, they were driven by his passion to get a good story and root out the bad guys. ... He could get excited about an investigation of public corruption or a bizarre animal story. We once spent weeks following a story about a dog on 'death row' that Bob believed was 'innocent.'"

River Heights council postpones decision on Hawthorne gate

By Paul Kelley

March 28, 2008 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- Some citizens of River Heights may be taking a new route to their homes in the near future.

A number of residents voiced their opinions to the River Heights City Council about the possibility of a new gate on Hawthorne Drive, which runs through Providence and River Heights.

Residents of Providence are displeased about the construction traffic that uses their part of the road to get to River Heights. The part of the road that is in Providence is a private road not owned by the city. It was proposed by the residents of Providence that a gate be put in to stop through traffic.

Residents of River Heights are not happy about the gate. They feel the gate will make it harder for emergency vehicles to reach their neighborhood.

For now the gate plans are on hold until a solution is decided.

In other business, Councilman Kent Parker said all of the fire hydrants have been checked and calibrated.

The council also discussed the cracks on the tennis courts in River Heights. Councilman Robert Gines said the cracks are covered by warranty and will be fixed as soon as there are two days in a row that reach 70 degrees.
