A FINAL WORD
Dear WORDies:

All good things come to an end, they say. Not-so-good things, too, for that matter.

This marks the last word of the 11th season of TODAY'S WORD ON JOURNALISM (pause for shrieks, applause, heavy sighs, general hand-wringing and sobbing), the international daily email spam of soundbites about the press, free expression, engaged citizenship, spelling, public life, writing, and sweatsocks.

Normally, the WORD continues its reign of terror through the second week of May. But this year, WORDmeister Ted Pease is on sabbatical from his day job, and has the chance at a junket. "So," he mused as he headed for the airport, "enough is enuff."

As Xenocrates (396-314 BC) famously whipped, "I have often regretted my speech, never my silence." In the WORD's case, what could be more true?

The WORD will meet with moguls who think 11 or 12 years' accumulation of its "wisdom" might make a book, a movie, or even a weblog. Exciting times, enhanced by St. Mumbles' tender chemical therapies. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, dear WORDsters, keep the faith. Tom Stoppard's right: "Words are sacred. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones, in the right order, you can nudge the world a little."

Nudge on.

Check out these reasons for chick flick marathons

MOVIES OF CHOICE: Chick flickers get ready for a marathon.

By Natalie Archibald

March 8, 2007 | Blankets, giggles, pajamas and ice cream are all necessities needed for a girl to relax from a busy day. Most girls have experienced the need for a girl's night. Girls need each other -- it's a fact. Having a chick flick marathon is just one way girls get to spend time away from boyfriends, homework and that dreaded awkward date.

Chick flick marathons usually last all night. My roommates and I have been having a chick flick marathon for 35 days and still going strong. In our marathon we watch at least one chick flick a day, but averaging two. While we watch these films we also do homework so we know we're being productive at the same time.

Roommate Abbie Smoot said, "There is nothing better after a long day at work and school than laying around with your roommates and watching other people fall in love. It helps you realize there is something better out there and something to live for and the thoughts of my future romance coming to life makes 35 days of a chick flick marathon worth it."

There are many people who think chick flicks are just for girls. The truth is there are a lot of men out there who actually don't mind a chick flick every now and then. At our marathon we've had a couple of guys watch movies with us -- now some of you are probably thinking "isn't it against the rules to have a guy at a chick flick marathon?" And yes, it is against the rules, the only reason we pardon them is because they bring a necessity, ice cream and chocolate. Thanks to them we now have six cartons of ice cream with us four girls in our apartment.

Roommate Kami Capener said, "Guys pretend they don't like chick flicks but I think deep down guys really do enjoy them. There is no way guys could handle 35 days in a row, and it's kind of creepy if they can. It is also impressive if they do watch a chick flick. It shows their sensitive side."

One of the main reasons girls like to watch chick flicks is they like to experience the feeling of being loved and loving someone else. When girls watch these flicks, they picture themselves as the characters and hope that someday it will happen to them. I know when my my roommates and I are done watching the selected movie we watch the credits and reminisce on the romantic parts of the movie. We talk about our future and how wonderful life will be. I know, it's cheesy, but for some odd reason it gives me and the roomies energy and hope.

"Every girl dreams of finding their own prince charming," Capener said. "But the dating process is always a little scary. Chick flicks provide a road map for finding and getting that prince charming to fall in love with her. After every chick flick we have watched we totally relate to the ups and downs that occurred in the movie. We just hope that we find a love with a happily ever after too."

Chick flicks help unite girls globally, they are a good way to start up a conversation with other girls. Most women love talking about the latest romance movie they've seen and quoting all the funny parts in the movie.

The tennis class I'm currently taking has only four girls and almost every day we talk about the last movie we watched and we repeat quotes back and forth on the court. The guys in the class, well let's just say they are clueless.

Liz Rich, my other roommate said, "Chick flick marathons are great because it helps you realize there are good guys out there even though I'm not dating them right now. It gives me something to look forward to."

As you can tell, these films play a crucial part in a girl's life -- especially the single life. The movies give us hope in a dark world where dating is not seen as fun, because we feel boys don't want to be tied down to one girl when most of us girls really want that perfect guy who will sweep us off our feet. So in a world us chicks live in, guys should give us more sympathy when making fun of our movie taste and let us rule the DVD player.
