Today's word on journalism

Monday, November 5, 2007

On Objectivity:

"I still insist that 'objective journalism' is a contradiction in terms. But I want to draw a very hard line between the inevitable reality of 'subjective journalism' and the idea that any honestly subjective journalist might feel free to estimate a crowd at a rally for some candidates the journalist happens to like personally at 2,000 instead of 612 -- or to imply that a candidate the journalist views with gross contempt, personally, is a less effective campaigner than he actually is."

-- Hunter S. Thompson, from Fear & Loathing: CORRECTIONS, RETRACTIONS, APOLOGIES, COP-OUTS, ETC., a 1972 memo to Rolling Stone editor Jann S. Wenner, excerpted in the current (November 2007) issue of Harper’s Magazine (Thanks to alert WORDster Andy Merton)

River Heights P&Z passes septic tank request to Board of Adjustment

By Brittany Strickland

October 5, 2007 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- The Planning and Zoning Commission met Tuesday to discuss the possible sewer connection at 647 Summerwild Ave. The owner of the property is Darren Child, who says that the area in question was originally built on a septic system and that he would prefer to not have to connect to the city's sewage system in order to rent out the property. The original owner was grandfathered in and Child wishes to be grandfathered in as well.

Commission member Carol Himmel made a motion to recommend that Wasatch Property Management apply to the Board of Adjustment with the request to remain on a septic tank. This decision was seconded by Drew Herseth. If you have further comment, contact Chairman Chris Himmel at 435-753-3249.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the River Heights City Building, 520 S. 500 East.

In other business, the commission:
-- discussed the development of a C2 (second commercial) Zone.
-- shared thoughts on a possible liquor license in River Heights.
