Today's word on journalism

Monday, November 5, 2007

On Objectivity:

"I still insist that 'objective journalism' is a contradiction in terms. But I want to draw a very hard line between the inevitable reality of 'subjective journalism' and the idea that any honestly subjective journalist might feel free to estimate a crowd at a rally for some candidates the journalist happens to like personally at 2,000 instead of 612 -- or to imply that a candidate the journalist views with gross contempt, personally, is a less effective campaigner than he actually is."

-- Hunter S. Thompson, from Fear & Loathing: CORRECTIONS, RETRACTIONS, APOLOGIES, COP-OUTS, ETC., a 1972 memo to Rolling Stone editor Jann S. Wenner, excerpted in the current (November 2007) issue of Harper’s Magazine (Thanks to alert WORDster Andy Merton)

River Heights approves transit sales tax

By Brittany Strickland

October 24, 2007 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- There was a unanimous vote amongst City Council members to adopt the ordinance (2-2007) increasing the Transit Sales Tax within the city of River Heights.

Mayor Bill Baker stated that, "The state changed the law and is requiring each of the cities that are collecting transit taxes to conform their ordinance with the state law. That's the whole reason for this." The tax will increase from .25 percent to .30 percent.

In other news, the council:
-- celebrated Councilman Brent Greenhalgh's birthday with cake, balloons, and noise"less" makers. Happy Birthday Brent!
-- established that River Heights' Public Works Supervisor, Kent Parker, will be testing the water system for traces of radium.
-- is still working on the plan to alter the parking structure around Ryan's Place Park.
