Today's word on journalism

On Objectivity:

"I still insist that 'objective journalism' is a contradiction in terms. But I want to draw a very hard line between the inevitable reality of 'subjective journalism' and the idea that any honestly subjective journalist might feel free to estimate a crowd at a rally for some candidates the journalist happens to like personally at 2,000 instead of 612 -- or to imply that a candidate the journalist views with gross contempt, personally, is a less effective campaigner than he actually is."

Logan man killed in 4th North crosswalk

By Angeline Olschewski

October 26, 2007 | LOGAN -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck Wednesday at about 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of 600 East and 400 North.

Guy A. Johnson, 41, of Logan was crossing on foot northbound in the east crosswalk but the light turned green before he cleared the intersection. Four cars heading westbound remained stopped in the inner lane, obstructing the view of Mark R. Elliott, 18, of Logan, whose 1997 Toyota Tacoma struck Johnson.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. No citations were given at the time; the investigation is ongoing.

"Obviously because this is a fatality," Lt. Troy Thurston said, "there is a lot to go over."

In response to a citizen suggestion that the posted 40 mph speed limit is too high Thurston noted, "It's a state highway.

"There is not a large number of accidents at that location," he added. "It was just the circumstances that day.

"We are sorry for all involved," Thurston said.
