Today's word on journalism

On Objectivity:

"I still insist that 'objective journalism' is a contradiction in terms. But I want to draw a very hard line between the inevitable reality of 'subjective journalism' and the idea that any honestly subjective journalist might feel free to estimate a crowd at a rally for some candidates the journalist happens to like personally at 2,000 instead of 612 -- or to imply that a candidate the journalist views with gross contempt, personally, is a less effective campaigner than he actually is."

-- Hunter S. Thompson, from Fear & Loathing: CORRECTIONS, RETRACTIONS, APOLOGIES, COP-OUTS, ETC., a 1972 memo to Rolling Stone editor Jann S. Wenner, excerpted in the current (November 2007) issue of Harper’s Magazine (Thanks to alert WORDster Andy Merton)

Wellsville P&Z postpones subdivision decision

By Lukas Brinkerhoff

October 26, 2007 | WELLSVILLE -- Mass confusion arose over a request to realign a property boundary at the planning and zoning meeting Wednesday.

Ron and Vicki Egbert purchased a lot with a home on it in 1989. The following year they purchased the lot adjacent. Sometime since then, the two lots were combined under one tax number. The Egberts would like the lots to be divided again to their pre-1990 status.

The confusion arose over whether the lots would need to be subdivided. Of those present, no one was absolutely sure of when or if the lots were properly divided when they were sold.

The Planning and Zoning Commission told the Egberts to get the complete title history of the lots and return for the next meeting. With the title history the commission could tell whether the lot would need to go through the subdivision process or not.

Once the boundary alignment confusion settled, the commission reviewed progress being made on a plot of land the city plans to annex. Camp Chef is interested in the land for a new facility but nothing is concrete.
