Today's word on journalism

Monday, November 5, 2007

On Objectivity:

"I still insist that 'objective journalism' is a contradiction in terms. But I want to draw a very hard line between the inevitable reality of 'subjective journalism' and the idea that any honestly subjective journalist might feel free to estimate a crowd at a rally for some candidates the journalist happens to like personally at 2,000 instead of 612 -- or to imply that a candidate the journalist views with gross contempt, personally, is a less effective campaigner than he actually is."

City seeks applicants for Gwilliam's seat on Mendon council

By Cody Gochnour

October 29, 2007 | MENDON -- There has been an empty chair on the City Council for over a month. Former Councilwoman Julie Gwilliam said she resigned because of a conflict.

Gwillliam and her husband had been renting a room in their basement. During her time on the council, Gwilliam said she learned that renting out the room was prohibited by a city ordinance encouraging single family residences. "I felt that if I wasn't obeying city ordinances, I should resign," said Gwilliam.

The room is now empty but Gwilliam expressed hope that the couple would be able to rent it out again.

An attempt to gain a conditional use permit for the residence was heard last week by the planning and zoning commission. While no official ruling could be made at that meeting, it was made clear by Mayor Morgan, in attendance, that conditional use would not likely be granted if the issue came before the city council, as it did not comply with the city plan.

Gwilliam stated she and Kent are not giving up hope, but rather looking into other options.

Meanwhile,Gwilliam's council seat remains empty, and will do so until January of next year. Anyone interested in being considered for the position can contact a member of the council. The council as a whole can be e-mailed at council@mendoncity.org.
