Today's word on journalism

On Objectivity:

"I still insist that 'objective journalism' is a contradiction in terms. But I want to draw a very hard line between the inevitable reality of 'subjective journalism' and the idea that any honestly subjective journalist might feel free to estimate a crowd at a rally for some candidates the journalist happens to like personally at 2,000 instead of 612 -- or to imply that a candidate the journalist views with gross contempt, personally, is a less effective campaigner than he actually is."

-- Hunter S. Thompson, from Fear & Loathing: CORRECTIONS, RETRACTIONS, APOLOGIES, COP-OUTS, ETC., a 1972 memo to Rolling Stone editor Jann S. Wenner, excerpted in the current (November 2007) issue of Harper’s Magazine (Thanks to alert WORDster Andy Merton)

October 31, 2007 | Dwight Schrute, naughty nurses and a bathroom stall. . . . What are the costumes seen Saturday night at the USU Howl?

The USU ticket office says it sold 4,263 admissions to the annual USU Halloween party that has a reputation for attracting people from across the state. The tickets cost $10 for students and $20 for non-students, so this event is a big money maker for ASUSU.

The Howl also has a reputation of keeping the USU Police Department quite busy. This year officers made a total of four arrests. Two arrests were for public intoxication and two for minors in possession of alcohol.

To try to control the madness, there was a long list of rules that attendees were required to comply with. Photo identification was required to show patrons were at least 18 years old. Once inside, partygoers were not allowed to go back outside and re-enter. And no masks or props were allowed inside. One attendee was even asked to remove the glasses that were part of her costume before entering.

The hot and sweaty partygoers packed onto the dance floors and didn't seem to notice that they were practically dancing on top of each other. The party included a hypnotist, several live bands and a DJ. Free pictures were also being taken and patrons could download them Wednesday.
