City planning commission accepts plans for Hyde Park Commons

By Brittny Goodsell Jones

October 6, 2008 | HYDE PARK -- Sketch plans for a proposed commercial development called Hyde Park Commons were accepted by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday. The development is scheduled to be built at approximately 400 West and Center and the area is made up of 21 acres.

The first item in the development process is whether or not to move a road that interferes with the property -- the road cuts into the development property causing the acreage to be split at odd places.

Glen Thompson, who represents the Hyde Park Commons development, said time is of the essence.

"If we don't make the decisions soon, it's going to shut down until next spring," Thompson said.

Council members discussed moving forward with sketch plans. Councilman Reed Elder said he will find out more information about the possible road alignment before their next meeting on Oct. 15.

The commission also discussed moving city council meetings and planning and zoning meetings from Wednesdays to Tuesdays beginning in January.

. Councilman Reed Elder said the proposal is due to city court running overtime and into city council meeting times, sometimes making meetings start 45 minutes late. Since court is held in the same room as council meetings, members have to wait for the room to become available before starting. Currently, the first and third Wednesday is reserved for planning and zoning meetings and the second and fourth Wednesday is reserved for city council meetings.
