Hyrum will sell 40 acres in Left Hand Fork canyon

By Seth Bracken

October 6, 2008 | HYRUM -- A 40-acre lot will be placed for auction at a minimum bid of $300,000, says Mayor Dean Howard.

The lot is in Left Hand Fork Canyon, and the money would be used to pay for city parks. The City Council discussed whether it would be a worthwhile business venture to keep the land public and create a campground on the site.

However, Councilman Tom LaBau said that even at full capacity, the campground would make only $1,830 in four months.

"Is it really worth keeping?" said LaBau. "Wouldn't that money be better used in parks that are here in the city than on a piece of property that is really hard to reach?"

Also, the city will pay a $4,600 fine for a sewage leak to the Utah Department for Water Quality. The leak resulted from a sewage failure that happened in spring, said Howard, when 300,000 gallons of sewage were leaked from a city-owned facility into a ditch, due to a lock-up in the computer system and the failure of an alarm.

"You wanted hip boots," said Howard.

The controls and system have since been changed and there was no major damage due to the leak, he said.
