Hyrum hustles to build bigger garage for Senior Center

By Seth Bracken

October 20, 2008 | HYRUM -- A three-bay garage will be constructed at the Senior Citizens Center at a cost of $66,500, because the current garage is too small and the center is storing food and cars together.

"We've got to do this or they're going to be closing us down," Mayor Dean Howard told the City Council Thursday night.

The plan for a new garage was originally introduced in 2005 but there was little competition with only three bidders, he said. The lowest bid in 2005 was about $10,000 more than this year's, said D. Brent Jensen, city administrator.

"We had to twist arms just to get bids," Howard said.

"Lot's of people want to work," said Howard. "It's a sign of the times."

Jensen also said that this was not in the budget but that there is enough to complete the project.

"It was more of an experiment," said Jensen. "We do have the money to complete this."

The city is currently riding on a $701,00 budget surplus and now is the time to complete the project due to the lower cost and the budget surplus, said Jensen.
