Review: If eating dinner in China were as tasty as the food in Hunan Village, I'd move there

By Ron Wallace

October 28, 2008 | We all want to go to a great restaurant but unfortunately these restaurants usually have a waiting list and since we are so impatient in the 21st century we are apt to compromise. On a Friday night we want to also watch a movie or play games so we end up going to a fast food joint like Wendy's or McDonald's instead of waiting. However, if you live in Brigham City or if you are driving by and want authentic Chinese that will impress anybody's taste buds and make the eyes stare in wonder, I've got your solution -- Hunan Village.

Almost every time my wife and I go to Ogden or Salt Lake City we either stop by this restaurant and eat, or at least discuss the option. You can always get a seat there because it's in a small town and almost everybody is getting take-out. It surprises me but probably more than half their orders are take-out. It seems that most people that come in to sit down are small families or people on dates.

The restaurant is owned by Chinese people that know how to cook dishes with vast expertise and they have an amazing selection to choose from. While your food is being prepared you can look at your place mat, which is a Chinese calendar that tells you what type of animal you are according to the year you were born. It is a 12-year based calendar and tells you what characteristics you tend to have, which animals to avoid and which animals are the best match for you. It is very entertaining to read and analyze. You can even take it home.

The ideal time for me to go is between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. because they have the lunch special. Last time I got the sesame chicken which includes a beginning plate of chicken salad (or you can get soup if you prefer). The chicken salad is hard to describe but it is my favorite. It consists of shredded cabbage, spicy Chinese noodles and small morsels of chicken. The thing that makes this salad stand out is the light oily dressing. Once your done with the salad you get cheese puffs with a red sweet sauce and a yellow spicy mustard sauce. I stay away from the yellow sauce because when I've tried it in the past I felt as if I lost my sense of taste for a moment and my nostril passages had opened up wider. There was no milk to cool it down. However, the red sauce is very sweet. The cheese puffs are crunchy on the outside and very creamy in the middle.

Once you're done with the appetizers you get the main dish which is stacked high and about 12 inches long. It's full of ham fried rice and sesame chicken. You look at it and question yourself, "How am I going to finish this?" There is plenty to eat and the rice has plenty of ham in it. As you eat it you say to yourself if this was how every meal was I wouldn't mind living in China permanently. The sauce for the sesame chicken is sweetened with brown sugar and has sesame seeds in it. The smell of the food makes you want to eat more but your stomach tells you to stop because you're full. This is what a trip to Hunan Village is like. It makes you want to come back.

The prices for lunch specials which include soup or salad, cheese puffs, ham fried rice and your main dish are between $5.29 to $5.99. The dinner specials are a little more expensive but you also get chow mein and your choice of two fried prawns or an egg roll. The dinner special prices range from $7.59 to $8.99. There are many selections to choose from and you don't have to get the lunch or dinner specials if you don't want to.

If you are interested in some fantastic Chinese food, Hunan Village is located at 686 S. Main St. in Brigham City.
