Today's word on journalism

Monday, October 22, 2007

Can't Scare the Old Gray Lady:

"Good journalism for an intelligent general audience is hard. And we’re really good at it. Taking on The Times is not as easy as waving a credit card and proclaiming yourself 'fair and balanced. . . .' We have every reason to feel confident that we can hold our own if [Rupert] Murdoch decides to build The Journal beyond its business-reader base. In all the Murdoch parlor-gaming, I don’t hear anyone suggesting that he would attempt to match the depth of our coverage in culture, science, education, health, religion, sports, lifestyle, etc., etc. Not to mention business coverage that even devout Journal readers find they can't afford to miss."

River Heights decides on improvements to memorial park

By Brittany Strickland

September 13, 1007 | RIVER HEIGHTS -- The plan to alter safety factors as well as practicality issues with Ryan's Park Place, 400 S. 600 East in River Heights, is beginning. The City Council met Tuesday to discuss plans to improve the structure of the park in order to prevent future liability charges as well as creating more spaces for residents and visitors to be able to park their vehicles in.

Ryan's Place Park was originally built in memory of a 2-year-old local boy. Ryan Steven Adams, who drowned on Aug. 9, 2006. Many residents of River Heights worked to restore the legacy of Ryan by constructing the park in 2007. The park is something that residents are fond of and it is a solid source of pride for the city.

In order to comply with the public demand, the council decided Tuesday to remove the older equipment and to try to arrange a safer turf for the park. They also decided to construct angled parking along the sides of the park.

Councilman Blake Wright said this change will create 48 new parking spaces for the city.

In other business, the council:
-- confirmed that a connection will be built between 500 South and 100 East.
-- mentioned that Apple Days, held on Sept. 8, was a success; however, there was criticism concerning aspects such as the food, city pride, and a lack of knowledge for opportunities to participate.
-- has spent approximately $30,000 successfully repairing city streets.

City Council meets every second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm at the city office building at 520 S. 500 East.
