Today's word on journalism

Monday, October 22, 2007

Can't Scare the Old Gray Lady:

"Good journalism for an intelligent general audience is hard. And we’re really good at it. Taking on The Times is not as easy as waving a credit card and proclaiming yourself 'fair and balanced. . . .' We have every reason to feel confident that we can hold our own if [Rupert] Murdoch decides to build The Journal beyond its business-reader base. In all the Murdoch parlor-gaming, I don’t hear anyone suggesting that he would attempt to match the depth of our coverage in culture, science, education, health, religion, sports, lifestyle, etc., etc. Not to mention business coverage that even devout Journal readers find they can't afford to miss."

Mendon annexes land for new school

By Cody Gochnour

September 17, 2007 | MENDON -- The City Council unanimously approved the annexation of land on which Cache County is building a new elementary school. The school will have conditional use of the land, which will revert to commercial zoning after the school closes.

During a public hearing before the council meeting, opposition was heard from Gene Hiibner. "Cache County School District did not jump the hoops," said Hiibner, referring to an earlier comment that Ty Haguewood had jumped through hoops to get his property annexed.

Haguewood's property was also annexed unanimously in the council meeting.

The council also reviewed the Mendon City General Plan for approval. The plan was not approved and will be reviewed again at the October meeting.

In other news, Mayor Morgan announced the resignation of Councilwoman Julie Gwilliam. The council is seeking candidates for her position, which will remain open until January.
