Today's word on journalism

Monday, October 22, 2007

Can't Scare the Old Gray Lady:

"Good journalism for an intelligent general audience is hard. And we’re really good at it. Taking on The Times is not as easy as waving a credit card and proclaiming yourself 'fair and balanced. . . .' We have every reason to feel confident that we can hold our own if [Rupert] Murdoch decides to build The Journal beyond its business-reader base. In all the Murdoch parlor-gaming, I don’t hear anyone suggesting that he would attempt to match the depth of our coverage in culture, science, education, health, religion, sports, lifestyle, etc., etc. Not to mention business coverage that even devout Journal readers find they can't afford to miss."

Hunting on private land, water availability discussed at Mendon P&Z

By Cody Gochnour

September 21, 2007 | MENDON -- The City Planning and Zoning Commission discussed changes to the Mendon City General Plan.

Commission member Jason Wooden suggested a goal to secure funding for snow monitoring sites in the Wellsville Range. These would allow officials to more accurately predict water availability and enable the city to better control its water usage.

The name of Mendon's water source was struck from the plan in compliance with Homeland Security measures.

Hunting privileges were also discussed. City Councilwoman Leslie Larson stated that it would be unfair to deny owners of large parcels of land the right to hunt on their own property, should the city annex that land. The decision was made to refer to state law except that discharge of a firearm would be allowed on large agricultural lots provided points such as legal distance from a dwelling and not hunting on cultivated ground without permission were met.

Commission member Ruth Cartee then discussed changes to Mendon's subdivision ordinances.
