Today's word on journalism

Monday, October 22, 2007

Can't Scare the Old Gray Lady:

"Good journalism for an intelligent general audience is hard. And we’re really good at it. Taking on The Times is not as easy as waving a credit card and proclaiming yourself 'fair and balanced. . . .' We have every reason to feel confident that we can hold our own if [Rupert] Murdoch decides to build The Journal beyond its business-reader base. In all the Murdoch parlor-gaming, I don’t hear anyone suggesting that he would attempt to match the depth of our coverage in culture, science, education, health, religion, sports, lifestyle, etc., etc. Not to mention business coverage that even devout Journal readers find they can't afford to miss."

-- Bill Keller, editor, New York Times, on Murdoch's promised Wall Street Journal challenge to Times national dominance, Oct. 16, 2007

Paradise council hears fire department's request for Jeep

By Tyler Larson

September 21, 2007 | PARADISE -- No decisions were made at the Paradise Town Council meeting Wednesday.

The Council listened to Fire Chief Troy Fredrickson, who discussed the fire department's need for a new Jeep to replace the model now in use. Fredrickson said he would keep searching for the best option.

In other business the council:
-- discussed purchasing a food trailer from the Pauni family from Logan.
-- discussed a proposal by town council member Leland Howlett to purchase a new portable PTO generator for the town's wells. Howlett said the beauty of the new generator is that it would be more reliable than the current generator.
-- had a formula spray put on Paradise dirt roads to lower dust complaints by several residents.
-- discussed putting a proposal from a resident into the next town council meeting agenda to swap 1.22 acres of Paradise residential land for 1.22 acres of land directly east of the Paradise Cemetery.
-- will be holding a zoning meeting Sept. 27 to discuss putting up a wireless cell phone tower.
