Today's word on journalism

October 10, 2008

Editor's Note:

Today's offering from E.B. White, one of my heroes, is not strictly about writing or journalism, although it could be taken that way. It does, however, describe the life of both the writer and the teacher --at least, on a good day when the bag o' rocks we all carry isn't too heavy.

On these days, writers whoop when words, thoughts and intent come together right; and teachers glow like the little flickering light bulbs that sometimes appear above that kid in the fourth row. This morning I found this glowworm in my email: "You may be interested to find that your class has made me think a little bit about working for the newspaper. It sounds like a fun job! but that would require knowing what was going on in the world, not one of my strengths (but I’m sure you already noticed that. haha). . . I prefer the logical to the illogical anyway, thus I'm an engineer. Your class has really caused me to question most everything in the news. I think you are succeeding in your task of teaching us to think about ‘How we know what we think we know?'"

Hmmm. Even as NPR reports a new 200-point slide in the Dow during a single newsbreak, and nations crumble and slide into the sea, it's going to be a good day. Once I get this sent, I think I'll take the dogs up the mountain.

Good advice

"I get up every morning determined both to change the world and to have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning the day difficult."

--E.B. White (1899-1985), wise man and writer, who knew when to take a walk with the dogs (Thanks to alert WORDster Louise Montgomery)

At Whit's End: Jessica Simpson fans on cloud 9, with good reason

By Whitney Schulte

September 10, 2008 | The ninth day of the ninth month happens to be a lucky day for Jessica Simpson. Nine has become Simpson's lucky number because it is the number her boyfriend, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, wears on his jersey. She has chosen this particular 9/9 to release her new record, Do You Know.

For Simpson, it's the day she finds out if all of her hard work paid off. Not that she cares. She just loves creating the music. Simpson has proudly proclaimed, more times than one, "Even if y'all hate my country record, I will make another one. And if you hate that one, I'll make another one after that."

But, Simpson shouldn't be worried about anyone "hating" her album. Now more than ever, you can tell she is comfortable with her voice and lyrics. She is letting the world into her emotions with the new album. Plus, Simpson has a bigger fan base than ever. Many of her pop fans have followed her smooth segue into this new genre of music, and many country fans who wouldn't normally have given Jessica's music a chance, are blown away by what they hear.

One of the greatest things to hear about Simpson is how well she is being received by crowds as she goes state to state promoting her album. One of her fans, Kayla, writes to sweetkisses.net, "So today me and my friend Simone went to the Indiana State fair at 10:30. We stood behind the grandstand ALL day waiting to see Jess. We sort of made a security guy as a friend cause he thought we were nuts for being there like 9 hours before the show. We stood in the burning heat for Jess."

Jessica Simpson definitely has some of the most loyal fans in the world. Most of the girls who write in to sweetkisses.net say that Simpson "brings them to tears" and "gives them chills" when she sings.

Jessica also got the opportunity of a lifetime Saturday when she performed at the Grand Ole Opry. In her first Opry Live interview, she says that singing country "feels like a homecoming for her." Simpson also said debuting at the Grand Ole Opry "means the moon and the stars to me."

With this record, many of Simpson's longtime dreams are coming true. Her idol, Dolly Parton, even sings a duet and co-wrote the title track Do You Know. The Houston Chronicle says about the song, "It's a torchy, sweeping song, a gorgeous mix of instrumentation and female wails. Parton draws something intriguing out of Simpson that, until now, hasn't been apparent."

In the words of Joanna Koszalka, one of Simpson's longtime fans and webmaster of her biggest fansite, sweetkisses.net, "Do You Know hits stores tomorrow (Tuesday). I am so excited!! Everyone needs to get up in the morning, go to the store and buy the album. After all, it's almost like getting Jess' heart on a silver plate!"
