Today's word on journalism

October 10, 2008

Editor's Note:

Today's offering from E.B. White, one of my heroes, is not strictly about writing or journalism, although it could be taken that way. It does, however, describe the life of both the writer and the teacher --at least, on a good day when the bag o' rocks we all carry isn't too heavy.

On these days, writers whoop when words, thoughts and intent come together right; and teachers glow like the little flickering light bulbs that sometimes appear above that kid in the fourth row. This morning I found this glowworm in my email: "You may be interested to find that your class has made me think a little bit about working for the newspaper. It sounds like a fun job! but that would require knowing what was going on in the world, not one of my strengths (but I’m sure you already noticed that. haha). . . I prefer the logical to the illogical anyway, thus I'm an engineer. Your class has really caused me to question most everything in the news. I think you are succeeding in your task of teaching us to think about ‘How we know what we think we know?'"

Hmmm. Even as NPR reports a new 200-point slide in the Dow during a single newsbreak, and nations crumble and slide into the sea, it's going to be a good day. Once I get this sent, I think I'll take the dogs up the mountain.

Good advice

"I get up every morning determined both to change the world and to have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning the day difficult."

--E.B. White (1899-1985), wise man and writer, who knew when to take a walk with the dogs (Thanks to alert WORDster Louise Montgomery)

Millville council grants building permits

By Jake Ipson

September 19, 2008 | MILLVILLE -- The city council had the privilege of scout troop 27 present the colors at their meeting. The scouts read the history of the Pledge of Allegiance and then brought the American flag into the meeting house where they led the congregation in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

After the display by the boy scouts, the city council meeting went rather quickly. Only one item on the agenda did not receive a unanimous vote and that was the conditional use permit for Randall Saxton to build a garage on his property. Saxton would like to build the garage at 580 N. 300 East. The problem Saxton is running into is he wants to build his garage before the house and in order to do that he needs to let all the neighbors within a 600 ft. radius know of his plans and after he submits the names of all the neighbors within 600 ft. to the city council he then must wait another 30 days until they can hold a public hearing in which they then will decide whether or not to allow him to build his garage or not. But the vote to allow him to proceed with a conditional use permit for now was voted with three yeses and one no coming from David Hair.

Considerations for a sign to be put up at 550 North on State Highway 165, requested by Kristen Gonzalez, Michael Anderson, and Matt Anderson. They are looking to put up a rustic not lit sign. But where that is residential area the sign can only be six feet high and they are looking to make a bigger sign. They would like it to be a 10 by 12 ft. sign. The city council said they would like to see a plan with dimensions before deciding anything. They also need to see Planning and Zoning commission first.

The council voted unanimously to accept the consideration for resolution for Millville Meadows Subdivision with a contingent to take care of a few minor details.

Colby and Sherry Gill were approved their building clearance for a single family home at 397 S. 200 East in the Millville Meadows Subdivision. The vote was unanimous to give them the building clearance. The council also voted unanimously to on the resolution to accept the Shire subdivisions.

The city council did not accept the resolution for Majestic heights subdivision until previously requested items are turned over to the city council. The consideration for a cooperative agreement between UDOT and municipalities regarding the traffic flow along SR-165 was postponed until the next meeting. The motion was approved to adopt revised appendices for subdivision ordinance. Finally, it was unanimously approved that the city will pay off all its bills.

In the discussion portion of the meeting, the idea was brought up that there should maybe be a deposit to be paid when people come in and are approved for a building permit. This would be a refundable deposit upon the inspection and completion of the landscaping being done. This deposit would be there in hopes of causing less damage to the streets and gutters on the road. Right now they are discussing a 2,000 dollar deposit. Nothing was finalized yet but the idea will be brought up in future meetings.
